Bengaluru: A big step for education! Karnataka’s Governor, Thaawarchand Gehlot, recently launched a set of engineering books that have been translated into Kannada. This special event took place at the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru and was organized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belgaum.
These books are meant for first-year engineering students and diploma courses. They help Kannada-speaking students understand difficult subjects better. The Governor said that education is very important for a country’s growth. He mentioned that in countries like Germany, France, and Japan, students learn in their own language, which helps them think better and understand more.
Gehlot also quoted a famous educator, Madan Mohan Malviya, saying that education should help students grow in all ways—mentally, physically, and emotionally. He emphasized that learning in one’s mother tongue is very effective. He talked about how the National Education Policy supports teaching in local languages to ensure that everyone can learn better. The government is planning to offer more courses like engineering and medicine in regional languages.
“Translating technical books into local languages is important for students’ understanding and can spark new ideas and research,” Gehlot added. The Governor praised AICTE for taking the lead in this translation project, with VTU helping to make sure that these books are available in Kannada.
Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar, who was also at the event, agreed that offering education in regional languages can help more students succeed. “When students learn in their own language, they can think more creatively and contribute to research,” he said.
