A big earthquake has hit Myanmar, causing many buildings to fall down on top of each other. This type of collapse is called a pancake collapse. Because of this, rescuers are struggling to save people trapped under heavy blocks of concrete. It would have been easier if the buildings fell at an angle.
In Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar, the situation is getting worse. Authorities say that 2,719 people have died, and more than 4,500 are hurt. Sadly, over 400 people are still missing. As more time passes, the chances of finding survivors get smaller.
The smell of death fills the air, and many locals believe that people are stuck under the rubble. After the big earthquake, strong aftershocks have caused even more buildings to fall. Just recently, another strong aftershock hit at 5:31 PM local time. This frightened many people and caused even more damage.
Residents are scared to sleep in their homes, and many have set up temporary camps outdoors. There are serious shortages of food, water, and medical supplies in the city.
India has sent a rescue team to help, including 80 special workers and four dogs that can smell if anyone is alive under the rubble. The damaged roads and communication lines are making rescue efforts tough.
