Sweden is giving Ukraine 16 billion kronor, which is about $1.6 billion, in new military help. This is the biggest support package from Sweden since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson told reporters that Sweden wants to show it is stepping up its support for Ukraine because the situation there is very serious.
Most of this aid, about 9 billion kronor, will be used to buy new military equipment, primarily made in Sweden and Europe. The equipment will be chosen based on what Ukraine needs the most. Additionally, around 5 billion kronor will help Ukraine’s own defence industry, and about half a billion kronor will come from the Swedish Armed Forces’ existing supplies.
Jonson highlighted that the war is at a critical point and that Sweden’s focus is fully on helping Ukraine gain strength for future negotiations. This is the 19th time that Sweden has given military aid to Ukraine, with the total amount since the beginning being about 80 billion kronor.
In prior support, Sweden has donated 18 Archer mobile artillery systems, 50 CV90 armored vehicles, and around 10 Leopard 2 tanks. They are now moving from giving older weapons to buying new ones specifically for Ukraine.
