Rahool Kanal from the Shiv Sena’s Yuva Sena (the Shinde group) said on Monday that they will welcome stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra in “true Shiv Sena style” when he returns to Maharashtra. Kanal, who was recently arrested along with other Sena workers for causing damage to a studio where Kamra joked about Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, encouraged the comedian, who lives in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, to handle the legal issues he faces in Mumbai.
Kunal Kamra is known for his funny and bold comedy but is in trouble with the law due to complaints about his comments. The police have filed cases against him in Maharashtra, and he is trying to get legal protection to avoid arrest while he prepares to defend himself.
Last Friday, the Madras High Court granted him temporary bail but with certain conditions that he must follow in Tamil Nadu. Kamra has been living there since 2021 and fears being arrested by the Mumbai police. Kanal reacted to the court’s decision by saying it’s good for Kamra but he should still return to Mumbai and face the law.
Kanal clarified that this is not a threat, saying, “Mumbai treats its guests well. Kamra should not be scared; he should just follow the law.” He also mentioned that members of the Yuva Sena often visit the police as part of the legal process.
On the other side, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that some ministers in the Maharashtra government are threatening Kamra, saying he should be “shot and hanged” for his remarks. Raut criticized Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for not doing anything about these threats. Raut asked for special protection for Kamra, similar to the protection given to actress Kangana Ranaut after her conflict with Shiv Sena.
