A Myanmar Muslim group says that over 700 worshipers died when a very strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit during Friday prayers in Ramadan. Tun Kyi, a member of the Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network, shared this information on Monday. The earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, causing damage to around 60 mosques. It is still unclear if the people who died in the mosques are included in the official total of over 1,700 earthquake victims. Videos from The Irrawaddy news site showed mosques falling down during the quake, while people ran away to safety. Tun Kyi mentioned that many of the damaged mosques were older buildings, making them more likely to be affected during such disasters.
