Dr. Marc Ruel, a famous heart surgeon at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, has decided to stay in Canada after turning down a great job offer in the United States. He was offered the role of leading the adult heart surgery division at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), a well-known hospital for medical research and treatment.

However, he changed his mind because of worries about political problems in the U.S. and discussions about Canada not being an independent country anymore. Dr. Ruel said, “I felt as a proud Canadian that I could not be part of that.”

With 30 years of experience, Dr. Ruel has made heart surgeries safer and faster for patients everywhere. His work has changed cardiac surgery for the better. The president of the UOHI, Dr. Rob Beanlands, expressed happiness that Dr. Ruel has chosen to remain in Ottawa, stating that having a top surgeon like him is great for the hospital.
