Toronto: The Liberal Party is letting a controversial MP, Paul Chiang, run for office again, even after he made some very unsettling comments. Chiang, who represents Markham-Unionville in Greater Toronto, suggested the idea of sending his rival, Joe Tay, to the Chinese Consulate in Toronto to claim a reward of one million dollars. Joe Tay is a conservative who has spoken out against China’s treatment of people in Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong police have placed a bounty of around CA$183,000 (about $128,000) on him.

After his comments, Chiang said he was sorry, calling his words “deplorable” and a serious mistake. Despite calls from others for him to step down, news outlets reported that the Liberal Party is keeping him as a candidate. A spokesperson from the party said Chiang understands he messed up and will stand with those fighting for human rights in Hong Kong. This situation comes at a time when Canada is concerned about China interfering in its elections. In the last election, Chiang won against Conservative candidate Bob Saroya. Current Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre expressed his disbelief that Chiang would support handing someone over to a government that could harm them.
