On Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Japan, saying that Japan is crucial in fighting against China’s aggressive actions. He emphasized how important it is for the U.S. and Japan to work together to keep peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region, especially near Taiwan. Hegseth praised Japan for its strong military cooperation with the U.S., noting that around 50,000 U.S. troops are based there, along with many fighter jets and a key aircraft carrier. This presence helps to limit China’s military power. Hegseth’s comments came after he criticized some European allies for taking U.S. support for granted. This is his first official trip to Asia, and before visiting Japan, he was in the Philippines. He also attended a memorial service on Iwo Jima, which is known for the tough battles between U.S. and Japanese forces during World War II, 80 years ago.
