Former ISRO chairman S. Somanath spoke at the 60th annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, highlighting India’s rich history in science and knowledge. He said that throughout history, from ancient texts like the Vedas to present-day discoveries, India has played a key role in helping the world understand the universe.
Somanath mentioned how ancient writings, such as the ‘Mahasalila,’ discuss the beginnings of the universe in a scientific way. He also talked about the ‘Surya Siddhanta,’ an ancient text that accurately describes the movements of the sun, moon, and planets.
He noted that Indian philosophy has always focused on balancing material success with spiritual growth, making India’s contributions unique. Despite advancements at ISRO, he pointed out that a strong connection between research, universities, and industries is still needed for progress.
Somanath encouraged students to read widely and work well in teams. “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” he said. He emphasized the importance of finding a mentor to guide them. He also advised students to take risks and be ready for opportunities because they won’t always be obvious.
Speaking about technology, Somanath reminded everyone that, even with all the advancements, we still face significant challenges like health, food, and transportation. Understanding technology and its effects on society is important for success.
He stressed that great leaders are good followers, based on solid principles. To help our nation grow stronger, we need to innovate, work together, and stay curious. Each failure is a chance to learn and reach higher goals.
