Anuj Kanaujia, a dangerous gangster and shooter, was killed by police in Jamshedpur. He had been spreading fear in eastern Uttar Pradesh for over 20 years. Kanaujia had a reward of ₹2.5 lakh on his head and was shot in a gunfight with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and Jharkhand Police on Saturday night.

A police officer, Amitabh Yash, reported that Kanaujia was a key sharpshooter for the Mukhtar Ansari gang. He was 42 years old and lived in a village in Mau district. Kanaujia committed his first murder in 2003 and was known for crimes like murder, attempted murder, and extortion. In total, 23 criminal cases against him were recorded in Mau, Ghazipur, and Azamgarh regions.

During the encounter, police found two guns with Kanaujia – a 9mm and a .32 caliber pistol. Interestingly, he died on the anniversary of Mukhtar Ansari, the gangster who helped him rise in the criminal world.

Kanaujia turned to crime because of personal fights in his village. With Ansari’s help, he became a feared criminal. He extorted money from local businesses in Mau and nearby areas. His wife, Reena, and a relative, Shivratan, were arrested in Jamshedpur two years ago for helping him with extortion.

After his wife’s arrest, Kanaujia left Jamshedpur but returned under a new identity. He avoided getting caught by changing places often and hiding in Bihar and Jharkhand. Alongside extortion, he also had a hand in securing money from contract deals.
