Seventeen years after the well-known ‘slapgate’ incident between Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, Harbhajan has publicly apologized for his actions that day. He shared his thoughts on his X account after someone posted a video of the incident. Harbhajan admitted, “What I did was wrong. I shouldn’t have done that.” He explained, “I made a mistake. I am human, not a god,” asking people to forgive him.
Originally, Harbhajan was commenting on the amazing moments following South Australia’s impressive win in the Sheffield Shield, but he took the chance to say sorry for his past behavior.
The ‘slapgate’ incident happened during the first season of the IPL when Harbhajan, who was the captain of the Mumbai Indians, had a fight with Sreesanth, who played for Kings XI Punjab. After the incident, videos showed Sreesanth crying and being comforted by teammates like Kumar Sangakkara. Because of his actions, Harbhajan was banned from the rest of that tournament.
Harbhajan has said sorry many times since that day, expressing his regret for how he behaved. In recent years, both players seem to get along better. Sreesanth has spoken about how he deeply respects Harbhajan, recognizing that his tears during the incident were more about feeling let down by someone he looked up to as a brother, not just out of pain.
Sreesanth has also mentioned that Harbhajan had asked him to help control his anger towards other teams. Known for being an emotional bowler, Sreesanth often shows a softer side, especially when remembering the bond he had with Harbhajan and their other teammates.
