A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 hit the Tonga Islands on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). After the quake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System quickly issued a tsunami alert. The earthquake happened at a depth of 10 kilometers, which is quite shallow.
Tonga is a beautiful island kingdom in the South Pacific, made up of over 170 islands, many of which have no people living on them. The islands are famous for their stunning white sandy beaches, colorful coral reefs, and thick tropical rainforests. The largest island, Tongatapu, is surrounded by lagoons and has tall limestone cliffs. It is home to Nuku’alofa, the capital city of Tonga, where you can find beach resorts, farms, and the Ha’amonga ʻa Maui, a historical stone gateway that dates back to the 1200s.
