The new movie “L2: Empuraan,” starring famous actor Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is getting a lot of attention. Although it looks like an action film, it also talks about important political issues. The movie starts with a scene about the 2002 Gujarat riots and features one of the people responsible for the violence as the main villain.
This portrayal has stirred up a lot of debate in Kerala. Right-wing groups are criticizing Mohanlal and Prithviraj, while the Congress and Left parties support the movie for exposing bad aspects of right-wing politics.
Murali Gopy, who worked on the script with Prithviraj, is staying out of the arguments. He believes everyone can see the film in their own way and thinks it’s best to let the discussions happen.
While some right-wing media outlets have called the film “anti-Hindu,” the local BJP party is not directly fighting against it. A leader from the BJP said that people should watch the film and form their own opinions, indicating they won’t be creating any campaigns against it.
In contrast, the Congress party praised “L2: Empuraan,” calling it a great film that represents India. They criticized those who oppose the movie, pointing out the hypocrisy of those who supported other films known for spreading false information.
Despite the controversies, the film is doing extremely well at the box office. On its first day, it made ₹24.50 crore in India and ₹67 crore worldwide. The makers announced that it passed ₹100 crore globally in just two days, breaking records for Malayalam films.
