A teacher from a Minnesota school is in trouble for stepping on a sixth grader’s back during a safety drill. The Star Tribune reported that Jason Rogers admitted to standing on the student. The boy’s mom told the police that after the incident, her son was in so much pain he was “walking around like an 80-year-old.”
What Happened?
According to court papers, during a lockdown drill, the boy was lying on his stomach when Rogers, who weighs about 350 pounds, stepped on his back for about 10 seconds. After that, the boy started crying because it hurt him.
In his defense, Rogers said he thought the students weren’t taking the drill seriously because some were lying down instead of sitting. He claimed he only placed his foot on the boy’s lower back and took it off when the child started to cry. However, another student said Rogers stood on him with both feet.
Social Media Reactions
Many people on social media were shocked. One person suggested schools should use cameras in classrooms to keep an eye on teachers. Another said, “OMG, these adults really do hate our children.” Someone else hoped Rogers was fired, saying, “Betraying the trust of children is one of the worst things you can do.”
Who is Jason Rogers?
Jason Rogers has been at the school for ten years. Besides teaching, he is the co-head wrestling coach and a junior high football coach. He is married and has two daughters.
