Tips for Staying Safe During an Earthquake
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has some safety tips during an earthquake:
If You’re Indoors:
– Drop to the ground and take cover under a sturdy table or desk.
– If you can’t find shelter, cover your head and face with your arms and crouch in a corner.
– Stay away from windows, doors, and anything that can fall on you.
– If you’re in bed, stay there, cover your head with a pillow, and don’t move if a heavy light could fall on you.
– Wait indoors until the shaking stops.
If You’re Outdoors:
– Stay where you are, but get away from buildings, trees, and utility wires.
– Open spaces are usually safest until the shaking ends.
If You’re in a Car:
– Pull over safely and stay in the car. Don’t stop under buildings or trees.
– Be careful when driving again after the shaking stops – check if roads look safe.
If You’re Trapped:
– Don’t light matches or move too much.
– Cover your mouth with a cloth.
– Tap on something to help rescuers find you, and use a whistle if you have one.
Stay safe, everyone.
