Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a strong message to the European Union (EU) about working with Canada. He stated that if their goal is to hurt the U.S. economy, he would impose “big tariffs” on both Canada and the EU. Trump emphasized that they should not team up if it means causing economic harm to the U.S.
Recently, the EU planned to place tariffs on American goods in response to Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum. However, the EU has delayed these plans until mid-April, allowing them more time to decide which U.S. products to target. They want to coordinate their actions better, which includes holding conversations with U.S. officials. The first round of tariffs will affect U.S. bourbon and other goods.
In retaliation, Trump has threatened a huge 200% tariff on wines and other alcoholic drinks from the EU if they go ahead with their tariffs. Additionally, he plans to apply new tariffs on April 2 to help balance trade.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would keep tariffs on U.S. products until the U.S. shows them respect in trade matters. Carney condemned Trump’s threat of more tariffs, calling them harmful to Canadian workers and businesses. He made it clear that Canada’s response will be calculated to avoid hurting their own economy.
Trump recently raised tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada from 25% to 50%. This move has escalated tensions between the two countries, sparking fears of an economic downturn. Carney mentioned that Canada will impose $30 billion CAD (about $21 billion USD) in retaliatory tariffs on a variety of U.S. products.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre made a strong statement saying Canada is a proud and strong country and will not back down from these economic threats.
