A controversy broke out involving comedian Kunal Kamra, who made fun of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a stand-up show. Kamra performed a funny version of a popular song from a movie, calling Shinde a “gaddar,” which means traitor.
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut reacted to this by questioning the character of people who insult others for attention. She wondered what qualifications these comedians have if they need to disrespect someone for a brief moment of fame. She said that if they want to write, they should focus on literature instead of making fun of people and their culture.
Kangana also defended a demolition that happened at the hotel where Kamra’s show occurred. She said it was done legally but complained about the illegal demolition of her own home back in 2020, which happened during her public disagreements with the Shiv Sena party.
Eknath Shinde compared Kamra’s jokes to taking a “contract” to insult someone, emphasizing that humor should have limits. He mentioned that while freedom of speech exists, it should be balanced, or else actions will have consequences. Some members of his party vandalized the venue where Kamra’s show took place.
Kamra stated that he won’t apologize for his comments and called out the vandalism at the comedy club.
