US Vice President JD Vance recently criticized Denmark for not being a good ally to the United States. This came up during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo. When asked if the US could buy Greenland, Vance said, “I think it’s possible.” He explained that Greenland is very important for America’s safety and security. Vance pointed out that Russian and Chinese ships move through the waters around Greenland, which is the world’s biggest island.
He accused the Danish government of not doing enough to help the US, saying they are “not being a good ally” by limiting American access to the island. “Getting more control over Greenland is the best way to keep our country safe,” he mentioned. Vance also said President Trump is determined to put American interests first, even if it means taking drastic steps to gain the island.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called owning Greenland “an absolute necessity,” which upset many Greenlanders. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute B. Egede, criticized the US for being too aggressive in their approach after a group of US officials visited recently.
During the interview, Vance claimed that many people in Greenland were unhappy with their Danish government. However, a report from The Guardian showed that 85% of Greenlanders opposed becoming a US territory. Vance called Greenland “an incredibly bountiful country,” suggesting the US was interested in its natural resources.
According to a White House statement, Second Lady Usha Vance and her son plan to visit Greenland soon to learn about its history and participate in local events, like the national dogsled race. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and security advisor Mike Waltz are also making the trip.
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to the recent US visit, saying it cannot be seen separately from the comments made by the US officials, highlighting that this is a serious matter.
