Mumbai: “Cricket can be tough. You can never be sure of winning,” said Travis Head just before kicking off his IPL 2025 season with an explosive 67 runs off just 31 balls against Rajasthan Royals. The South Australian batsman knows the reality of the game well. He learned this during his early years in international cricket, where it took him five years to really make a mark. Now, he is one of the top T20 scorers.
“Prepare well and hope for the best. If things don’t go your way, just relax—it’s not far away,” he tells broadcasters. Head has learned to focus on the game and enjoy it, which has made him a more confident player. “He has a relaxed attitude, making him really dangerous,” says Aaron Finch, an expert for JioStar and Head’s first T20I captain. “In T20 cricket, it’s impossible to perform well all the time. If you get too attached to the results, you might change your batting style,” Finch added.
Indian bowlers know this well, as they have often faced the consequences of Head’s strong batting. In the 2023 World Test Championship final, he scored big runs because they didn’t try to bowl short balls early on. He was also successful in the 2023 World Cup final and made hundreds in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Travis Head isn’t your typical elegant batsman; he adapts his technique for powerful hitting. Last year, Abhishek Sharma helped him overcome challenges from spinners, and this season, he showed his intent right away against Maheesh Theekshana by scoring big boundaries.
Travis, who makes a great opening pair with Abhishek, is helping Sunrisers Hyderabad dominate, just like Chennai Super Kings have done in the past. “Travis Head is living the dream,” Finch says, as he can sit out as an Impact Player and still walk in to open the batting.
