In New Delhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke out on Monday about the importance of protecting India’s education system. He said that even though different political groups have their own ideas, they all agree on one thing: stopping the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from taking control of education in India. He warned that if the RSS takes over education, it could harm the country and its future.
Gandhi made these remarks during a protest against the government’s education policies, which took place at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He explained that many universities in India are now influenced by the RSS. He believes that this could affect how vice-chancellors (the heads of universities) are chosen, warning that it could lead to a system where appointments are made based on RSS recommendations instead of merit.
Rahul Gandhi criticized the recent plans put forward by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for appointing university leaders. He emphasized that everyone involved in the opposition must protect India’s education and work together, regardless of their differences.
Gandhi also took a jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that while Modi talks about events like the Kumbh Mela, he should focus on the big problem of youth unemployment instead. Gandhi argued that young people are struggling to find jobs because of the government’s decisions, which he believes favor big business owners.
The protest featured members from various student organizations, united in their demands. These included restoring student council elections in universities, changing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, preventing paper leaks, and ensuring that scholarships are given out on time.
