Comedian Kunal Kamra recently performed a stand-up show in Mumbai that has upset supporters of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. After the show, some of Shinde’s fans vandalized the venue where Kamra performed and even threatened him, saying they wouldn’t let him “walk freely.”

A member of the Shiv Sena political party, Murji Patel, has filed a police complaint against Kamra. In turn, police arrested some of the people involved in the vandalism.

During his show, Kunal Kamra joked about the politics in Maharashtra, especially the confusing elections there. He pointed out how different political groups have separated from each other. He humorously said, “One guy started it all and used the word ‘gaddar’ (traitor) to describe him.” He continued by explaining how the parties became so mixed up that voters ended up with nine buttons to press on their voting machines, leaving everyone confused.

Kamra also sang a funny song about a politician from Thane, which clearly hinted at Eknath Shinde without naming him. The song joked about Shinde’s political moves and mentioned the idea of taking down family politics.

Eknath Shinde had led a revolt in June 2022, moving away from his party to become the Chief Minister with support from the BJP. This split the Shiv Sena party into two groups, each claiming the right to the party’s name and symbol. In October 2022, the Election Commission gave the original name and symbol to Shinde’s group, forcing the other half of the party to create a new identity.
