Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the legendary captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), recently talked about Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy from him last season. Dhoni stepped down from being the captain but told Gaikwad last year that he would lead the team again for IPL 2024.

Last season was tough for Gaikwad, as CSK did not qualify for the playoffs and ended up in fifth place. Dhoni explained why he chose Gaikwad as his successor, saying, “Ruturaj has been with us for a long time. He has a great temperament and stays calm, which is why we thought he would make a good captain.”

Dhoni said he plans to give Gaikwad space to lead without interference. He told Gaikwad, “If I give you advice, it’s your choice whether to take it. I will try to step back and let you make the big decisions.”

Some people thought Dhoni was still making choices last season, but he clarified that Gaikwad was in charge of 99% of the decisions, like who should bowl and where to place players in the field. Dhoni said, “I just helped him a little; he did a great job managing the team.”

In their first match of the 2025 season, CSK beat their rivals, the Mumbai Indians, at Chepauk Stadium, showing a great performance and earning important points.
