Ranchi: On Monday, the Communist Party of India (CPI) held a big march to ask for important changes in Jharkhand. They want statues of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and Jaipal Singh Munda to be placed in the state assembly. Dr. Ambedkar led the team that created India’s Constitution, while Munda, from Jharkhand, was a member of that team.
Many party supporters joined the march, led by CPI’s national general secretary, D Raja. He pointed out that it’s been years since Jharkhand was formed on November 15, 2000, but these statues have not yet been installed.
Raja also said that big companies are taking advantage of Jharkhand’s wealth, especially its minerals. He claimed that both the central and state governments are allowing this exploitation of the state’s resources.
In addition to the statues, the protesters had other demands. They want the land bank canceled and for Special Commissions for Scheduled Castes and Displaced persons to be formed. They also called for fair job policies and a minimum wage of ₹26,000 for workers who aren’t in organized sectors.
The rally began at Saheed Maidan in Dhurwa and was meant to go to the assembly. However, the march was stopped by security forces.
Two other groups, the Jharkhand Andolankari Sangharsh Morcha and the Jharkhand Rajya Visthapit Sangharsh Morcha, held a separate march. They are asking for a monthly pension of ₹50,000 for those who fought for Jharkhand’s creation and for job opportunities for their families.
