In Nagpur, police have arrested 14 more people linked to recent violence, bringing the total number of arrests to 105. Among those arrested on Friday, there were 10 young people.
The trouble started on March 17 when people threw stones and caused fires in different areas of the city. This followed rumors that a sacred cloth (called a “chadar”) was burned during protests. These protests were led by a group called the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which wants to remove the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
Nagpur’s police chief, Ravinder Kumar Singhal, said three new police cases have been opened regarding the riots and that the police will decide later when to lift the curfew in some city areas.
During the violence, 33 police officers were hurt, including three who hold high-ranking positions. One main suspect, Fahim Khan, has been charged with serious crimes, including sedition.
