On Saturday, Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, strongly criticized the BJP-led Central government for its sudden decision to redraw the boundaries of Lok Sabha constituencies. He claimed this move is not based on rules or the Constitution but is just for the BJP’s political gain.
Vijayan warned that if the delimitation happens based only on population, southern states like Kerala could lose more parliamentary seats while northern states would gain seats. He explained that Kerala has been working to reduce its population since 1973, when the last redrawing took place, which means southern states like Kerala wouldn’t benefit from this change.
He further stressed that the actions of the Central government are harming the country’s democratic system and federal structure. If Kerala loses more political representation while its share of national funds decreases, it would be unfair and troubling. To address this issue, several southern states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and others have come together to protest.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, is leading this effort and is calling for unity among all opposition parties to fight against the delimitation process. During their meeting in Chennai, it was proposed to set up a committee of legal experts to ensure fair redrawing of the boundaries. This meeting was attended by various leaders from different states, who all agree that this change could diminish the political strength of southern states.
Overall, this situation highlights the growing tension between regional leaders and the central government, especially regarding important issues like population representation.
