The government recently launched a new platform called AIKosha. This platform has over 300 sets of non-personal data from more than 10 different organizations. Jitin Prasada, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, confirmed that the government does not plan to make money from this data.
In response to a question from lawmaker Milind Murli Deora during a parliamentary meeting, Prasada explained that users cannot purchase or subscribe to the data. Instead, they can freely download it. To do this, individual users need to sign up for DigiLocker using their phone numbers, and organizations must register using their Aadhaar numbers through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
AIKosha aims to provide secure access to useful datasets for developing artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Users who upload data can control who can see it, following the National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy from 2012.
Prasada also shared that the platform follows Indian laws, including the Information Technology Act and the upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection Act. This ensures that personal information is handled properly and legally.
The datasets on AIKosha include valuable resources, such as 1,684 hours of labeled speech data in 12 different Indian languages. This can help create tools for automatic speech recognition. Private companies like Sarvam AI and Ola Krutrim have also shared their AI models on this platform.
