Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has once again called for a caste census. He believes it’s an important step to reveal the “truth of inequality and discrimination” in India. Gandhi shared his thoughts on social media and highlighted a conversation he had with Sukhdeo Thorat, a respected academic expert on Dalit issues.
He reminded everyone about the Mahad Satyagraha, a significant protest led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on March 20, 1927, against caste discrimination. Gandhi pointed out that this wasn’t just a fight for access to water but for equality and respect too. He said the struggle for a “rightful share” started 98 years ago and continues today.
Gandhi emphasized that a caste census is crucial for exposing inequality. He stated that Babasaheb Ambedkar’s dream of equality is still not fully achieved, and they will keep fighting for it.
In response, the BJP criticized Gandhi’s comments, claiming he shows a “nepotistic” view of fairness. BJP leader CR Kesavan accused the Congress party of disrespecting talented people from marginalized communities who have worked hard to succeed.
