On Friday, a senior lawyer expressed shock before the Delhi high court after reports surfaced about a large amount of cash found in Justice Yashwant Varma’s home. Justice Varma was not at work that day. This issue caught the attention of the Rajya Sabha, where members discussed the need for judicial accountability. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar promised that they would find a proper way to talk about this issue soon.
The lawyer, Arun Bhardwaj, told the judges that everyone was upset and worried about this incident. “We respect the court and its judges, but this situation has shaken us. Please do something to stop this from happening again,” he said. The Delhi high court also announced that Justice Varma’s court was closed that day.
Reports say the Supreme Court Collegium has decided to transfer Justice Varma back to his original court in Allahabad due to this scandal. During the Rajya Sabha session, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh brought up the issue, highlighting the shocking amount of cash discovered. He reminded the chairman about an ongoing impeachment notice for a judge in Allahabad.
Chairman Dhankhar expressed concern that this incident did not come out sooner. He noted that if it had involved a politician or businessman, they would have faced immediate backlash. He assured that a transparent and accountable response would be put in place, and he planned to talk to leaders from both parties to create a plan for a proper discussion.
