Sandro Mamukelashvili, who was picked in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft from Seton Hall, usually sat on the bench for most of his games. He started his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he was a backup for superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. Now with the San Antonio Spurs, he finally got his chance to shine when other players, Victor Wembanyama and Charles Bassey, were injured.
In an exciting game against the New York Knicks, Mamukelashvili scored a personal best of 34 points! He did this by making 13 out of 14 shots and hitting seven three-pointers. He also grabbed nine rebounds. His amazing performance made history because he reached those 34 points in just 19 minutes and 26 seconds, breaking records held by big names like Kevin Durant.
That night, Mamukelashvili became one of only four NBA players ever to shoot 90% or better while making every one of his three-point shots and free throws. The Knicks’ defense allowed him to find open shots, and he even dunked, plus made a crucial assist near the end of the game.
Even with Wembanyama and others missing from their team, the Spurs did great! Rookie Stephon Castle scored 22 points, and Chris Paul added 12 points and nine assists. The Spurs took control of the game early, leading by 28 points at one point. Mamukelashvili helped seal the win by scoring important points in the fourth quarter, even as the Knicks tried to make a comeback.
After the game, the famous rapper Flavor Flav ran onto the court to celebrate with Mamukelashvili, creating an exciting atmosphere in the arena. Mamukelashvili felt like a star as he shared his joy with family. The Knicks had some strong players too, with Karl Anthony Towns scoring 32 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
This impressive game proved that Mamukelashvili is not just a backup; he can make a big impact when it matters most!
