A recent survey shows that many Canadians are worried about U.S. tariffs, President Trump’s policies, and American actions that could harm Canada. The survey was done by Leger from March 14 to 16 and included over 1,500 people. It found that 41% of Canadians think these issues are the biggest threats to their country. This is a big jump of 13% from earlier weeks.
Quebecers’ Concerns Make Headlines
People in Quebec are the most worried. The survey found that 51% of Quebec residents see U.S. tariffs and Trump as their biggest concerns. In Ontario, 42% feel the same way, while 39% of British Columbians, 35% of Atlantic Canadians, and 32% of those in Manitoba and Saskatchewan share this worry. Alberta residents seem less concerned, with only 26% reporting these issues as major problems.
Impact of U.S. Tariffs and Prices Rising
Sebastien Dallaire, an executive at Leger, said it’s not surprising that people are worried, given all the news about Canada-U.S. relations. He mentioned that in the next election campaign, voters will want to know who can best handle affordability issues, which include tariffs. Dallaire warned that if tariffs are put in place on April 2, Canadians will feel the impact in their wallets soon.
Concern Across Ages
The survey also found that older Canadians, especially those over 55, are more worried. About 54% of them view U.S. tariffs and policies as a big threat, compared to only 23% of younger Canadians aged 18 to 34.
Political Views Matter, Too
Supporters of the Liberal Party and Bloc Québécois are most worried, with 57% and 55%, respectively, citing U.S. tariffs and policies as important issues. Meanwhile, fewer people from the NDP (35%) and Conservative Party (29%) feel that way.
Thinking of Moving Away
The survey also revealed that more than one in three Canadians would consider moving to another country if they felt the U.S. might take over Canada. Nearly half of younger Canadians (ages 18-34) would think about leaving, while fewer older Canadians (35-54 and over 55) would feel the same.
