Blake Lively is asking the court to throw out Justin Baldoni’s huge $400 million defamation lawsuit against her and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. In a legal document filed on Thursday in New York, Blake’s team argued that Baldoni doesn’t have the right to sue her, referencing California laws.
They called the lawsuit an “abuse of the legal process” and said it doesn’t belong in federal court. They pointed out that California law protects those who speak out about sexual harassment or retaliation, whether in court or in public.
Blake’s lawyers also stated she is protected by laws that support free speech and reporting on harassment. They claimed that Baldoni and his studio could end up paying damages instead. This lawsuit is backfiring on them, causing more trouble for Baldoni, according to Blake’s legal team.
Blake’s filing comes after Ryan also tried to dismiss Baldoni’s case, saying it was based on “hurt feelings.” Ryan insisted he only called Baldoni a “predator” and that harsh words don’t count as defamation unless Baldoni can prove Ryan didn’t believe it.
