Nitish Kumar Reddy had an amazing year in 2024! He played his first match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and got picked for the Indian T20I team. His biggest moment came when he received his Test cap during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at just 21 years old. Nitish showed his talent by scoring his first Test century in the series.
One of the coolest parts of the Australia tour for Nitish was getting to play with Virat Kohli. Nitish grew up looking up to Kohli, so batting together in Perth, where Kohli scored a century, was a dream come true for him. Even though they shared the dressing room, Nitish still felt nervous around Kohli, who is 36. In an interview with Puma, a brand that both players represent, he said, “I always feel nervous when I see him. I don’t know why. I’ve never felt this way with any other player.”
Nitish remembers receiving his Test cap from Kohli fondly: “I remember cap number 315 for Nitish Reddy,” he said. He also shared a funny story from a few years ago when he was just starting his career. At an awards show, he really wanted a photo with Kohli but didn’t have his own phone. So, he borrowed his uncle’s phone and took a quick selfie without Kohli noticing.
Though India lost the series 3-1 in Australia, Nitish stood out as a rookie player and showed that he belongs in Test cricket, even in tough conditions. Now, everyone is excited for the IPL, where he helped the Sunrisers Hyderabad reach the finals in 2024. In the upcoming IPL 2025 season, he hopes to help his team win. Their first match is at home against the Rajasthan Royals this Sunday.
