New Delhi: The Indian government plans to create digital land records for cities. This decision will come after testing a program in 152 urban areas in 29 states and union territories. Manohar Lal Khattar, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, shared this in the Lok Sabha.
Khattar explained that the pilot program, costing about ₹193.81 crore, is part of a project called NAKSHA. This project, which works with the Survey of India, includes aerial surveys and ground checking in collaboration with local governments.
For rural areas, there is also a program called the Digital India Land Records Modernization Program (DILRMP), which has been helping to digitize and improve land records since 2016-17. This program is fully funded by the central government.
Once a new law is passed in Parliament, the Housing Ministry will set up the digital land records for cities. Each state will handle its own land records.
In the July 2024 budget, the government highlighted the importance of updating land records. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that a new IT-based system for property records will help cities manage their finances better.
According to the Economic Survey 2023-24, having digital land records will make land transactions clearer, reduce ownership disputes, and improve land management.
