The ECI mentioned that Aadhaar is only for proving a person’s identity, and everyone has the right to vote in India. A meeting was held in New Delhi with key officials, including the Chief Election Commissioner and representatives from various government ministries. They discussed ways to link the Aadhaar data and the EPIC database smoothly.
Recently, there have been complaints about duplicate EPICs in states like West Bengal. Some opposition parties say this could affect the fairness of elections. The ECI is working to remove these duplicates.
In a past Supreme Court case, the ECI said that submitting your Aadhaar number isn’t necessary when registering to vote, but they want to clarify it more. They aim to simplify forms that voters fill out, making it easier for everyone.
The ECI will conduct a pilot project to test how to match Aadhaar with EPIC before moving to a full-scale operation. They recorded that over 662 million Aadhaar numbers are already linked as part of their electoral plans. However, they confirmed that the actual linking hasn’t started yet, and stored Aadhaar numbers are kept securely.
The goal is to connect the unique Aadhaar numbers to the EPIC numbers correctly so that there’s no confusion.
