Recently, famous Indian cricketer Virat Kohli expressed his thoughts about the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its rules regarding players’ families on overseas tours. After Kohli’s comments, some people thought the BCCI might change its policy. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated on Wednesday that the current family rule will stay the same. He emphasized that this rule is very important for both the team and the country.
The family rule is part of the BCCI’s guidelines created after India faced tough times in Test cricket. The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, was whitewashed at home by New Zealand last October and lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The rule allows players who are away from India for more than 45 days to have their families join them for one visit of up to two weeks during a series.
Although some players, including Kohli, are unhappy with this rule, Saikia assured that it is applied equally to everyone in the team, including players, coaches, and support staff. “We know some players feel differently, and everyone has the right to voice their opinions,” Saikia explained. He reminded that this family policy has been in place for a long time and is meant to help team unity.
Saikia also mentioned that while there might be a little discomfort with the family rules, the BCCI has increased the time family members can spend with players during tours and may make special exceptions in the future.
