Chandigarh: Shreyas Iyer has played an important yet quiet role for India in the Champions Trophy, helping them win by batting at number four. Now, as he joins Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he wants to make an even bigger impact by batting at number three. Though he’s not currently on the Indian T20 team, a strong performance this season could get him back in the mix for international play.
Last season, Iyer was the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders and helped them win the title while batting in the middle order. Now, with Punjab Kings, a team that has struggled since the IPL started in 2008, he feels relaxed about leading them and just wants to win more trophies.
“I want to establish myself as a number three batsman in T20 games, and that’s my main focus this season. I’m clear about where I want to bat, and I’ll stick to it as long as the coach agrees,” said Iyer during a media event with head coach Ricky Ponting.
Iyer is excited to work with Ponting again. They have already had a successful relationship at Delhi Capitals. “I’ve worked with him for almost three years, and I know how he thinks. He supports everyone, which boosts our confidence. He’s great at keeping a steady mind no matter the game’s outcome,” Iyer mentioned.
Ponting has a lot of praise for Iyer. He was eager to coach him again and believes Shreyas is among the best players he has worked with. “He’s a great person and an IPL-winning captain. Having a strong relationship between the captain and coach is important, and we have that,” said Ponting.
Ponting also shared that winning home games is crucial for the team’s success, and that’s an area where Punjab Kings has fallen short in recent seasons. “If you can’t win at home, you’re unlikely to win the IPL. We’re ready to play exciting cricket, and I know our players can do it,” he added.
Punjab Kings will kick off their IPL season against Gujarat Titans on March 25 in Ahmedabad.
