Iga Swiatek, the world number two in women’s tennis, found herself in a tricky situation during her match at the Indian Wells tournament in California. She lost to a young player named Mirra Andreeva, who is only 17 years old, in the semifinals. The final score was 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 in favor of Andreeva, who will now play against Aryna Sabalenka in the finals.

During the match, Swiatek showed her frustration when she accidentally nearly hit a ball-kid while trying to bounce a ball on the ground. Many people criticized her behavior, especially because she was also arguing with the umpire at the same time.

Swiatek took to Instagram to say sorry. She wrote, “I let my frustration show, and I’m not proud of it. I didn’t mean to aim the ball at anyone. I was just trying to express my feelings,” she explained. “I apologized to the ball-kid right away. We made eye contact, and I felt bad it happened near him.” Swiatek mentioned that many players bounce balls when they’re frustrated, and she didn’t expect such strong reactions.

She admitted that she usually controls her impulses better, joking that she may have misjudged her aim because of the heat of the moment. Swiatek also shared that she has been feeling frustrated for some time due to things beyond her control, and she plans to work on this with her team.

After her loss, Andreeva won the Indian Wells trophy by defeating Sabalenka, marking a big achievement in her young career. Now, all eyes in the WTA will be on the next tournament in Miami.
