A large power outage has left Panama in darkness after an explosion and fire at the La Chorrera Thermoelectric Power Plant. Officials believe the incident was caused by a “technical fault” in one of the generators, shutting down electricity all over the country.
Firefighters are working hard to put out the fire, and officials say that power will slowly come back in the next few hours. Panama’s President, Jose Raul Mulino, reached out to people through social media. He said, “The Director of ETESA tells me that a private power generator caused the problem. We will restore service gradually. Please stay calm.”
The blackout has also affected drinking water. Many water treatment plants need electricity to work, so there is currently no drinking water available. Authorities have assured everyone that staff are ready on-site to turn the systems back on as soon as power is restored.
Residents are asked to be patient while teams work to fix the situation and bring back important services across the country.
