In Guwahati, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with the leaders and top police officials from the northeastern states on Sunday. They talked about new criminal laws called BNS, BNSS, and BSA that are being put into place in the region. Even though Manipur is under President’s rule, its Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, was part of the meeting.
According to a post by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office on social media, Shah was leading a conference to discuss these new laws. Leaders from seven northeastern states attended, while police heads from five states joined, except for those from Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur. Chief secretaries from several states were also present.
During the meeting, each of the eight states shared updates about how they are implementing three laws: Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The conference began with opening remarks by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and followed with a speech from Shah, who also launched a book titled ‘New Criminal Laws: Standard Operating Procedures and Rules’ created by the Assam CID.
The last presentation will be made by Bureau of Police Research and Development Director General Rajeev Kumar Sharma, who will inform everyone on how these laws are being put into practice in the northeastern states. Afterwards, there will be discussions about everyone’s updates. At the end, Shah will share his thoughts on the laws and ways to improve their implementation.
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was joined by fellow leaders from Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, and Sikkim. Many top officials from the central government, including Director of the Intelligence Bureau Tapan Kumar Deka, are also participating in the meeting.
