An Indian man recently shared a story on Reddit about his close friend who moved abroad and changed how he acts when it comes to following rules. Many people found the story relatable. It showed how some Indians, who used to ignore traffic signals and cut in line in India, suddenly follow the rules hard when they are in other countries.
During a video call, the Reddit user reported that his friend was patiently waiting in line at a grocery store. He explained how people in that country follow the rules, like using self-checkout machines and not jumping ahead in lines. This friend once had a habit of breaking bus lines and running red lights for fun. Interestingly, the user claimed he was the one who used to stop him from doing these things!
Many people joined the conversation, discussing how humans easily adjust to their surroundings. One commenter said, “People follow the rules of the environment they are in. In a place where everyone behaves, you’ll do the same; otherwise, you might get left behind.”
The discussion turned into a debate over whether these behavior changes show hypocrisy or just an instinct to fit in. Some said rules are enforced much more strictly abroad, while in India, people often have a “Chalta hai” attitude, meaning “It’s okay” in Hindi.
One person commented, “Rules can only work if the setting supports them. In a fancy place, we act properly because everyone else does too. But in public places, it feels wild, and you might be seen as silly for following all the rules.”
Another user said, “Isn’t he right? In India, people don’t call each other out for bad behavior, but they do in western countries.”
