Tensions rose in Sainthia town, West Bengal, on Saturday after fights broke out between two groups during Holi celebrations. To stop rumors and keep people safe, the state government shut down the internet in five nearby areas from March 14 to March 17. However, phone calls and text messages can still be sent, and newspapers can still be read.
Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, criticized the government, saying the internet shutdown shows that they can’t control the situation. He took to social media, claiming the government is trying to hide what really happened during the fights.
Reports say that a disagreement started on Friday between some people who were drinking and another group. This turned into a larger fight, with stones being thrown and people getting hurt. Police had to step in and use light force to calm things down.
Adhikari also mentioned that problems weren’t just in Birbhum but in other parts of the state as well. He urged higher authorities, including the Home Ministry and the Bengal Governor, to look seriously into the law and order situation.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar criticized the state police, saying they are ineffective.
