Did you know that Aamir Khan had a chance to star in the films Darr and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, but he decided not to? This choice ended up benefiting Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. At the trailer launch for Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar in Mumbai on Sunday, Aamir talked about these past opportunities.
When asked which films he regret not taking, Aamir shared about Darr. He explained, “I was supposed to do Darr, but didn’t for some reasons, not related to creativity. Looking back, I think it worked out for the best because Shah Rukh fit the role better. If I had done it, everything might have turned out differently. I don’t really regret it since the film was great and successful. I just wasn’t the right match for it.”
Then someone in the audience reminded him about Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and Aamir replied, “Oh yes! I heard the script and thought it would be better for Salman Khan. I liked the story but suggested that they show it to him instead. The writer didn’t go to Salman right away but went to Kabir Khan first, who then approached Salman.”
Aamir also mentioned Munna Bhai, saying that the director, Raju, wanted him in the film, but things changed, making it more of a sequel.
About the Films
Darr, released in 1993 and directed by Yash Chopra, became a breakthrough for Shah Rukh Khan, who was fairly new in Bollywood. He played an obsessed lover and received praises for his performance.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan, directed by Kabir Khan and released in 2015, was a huge hit. It starred Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and it tells the touching story of a man from Delhi helping a lost Pakistani girl find her way back home.
