Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a surprising and tense meeting with former US President Donald Trump at the White House. The meeting was supposed to be about a deal to help Ukraine with rare earth minerals, but it turned into a loud argument.
Things started off friendly, but quickly got heated. Trump accused Zelensky of being disrespectful to the United States. After a shouting match that lasted over two hours, Zelensky was asked to leave without signing the important deal. He left the West Wing at 1:42 p.m., just after the argument escalated over comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Vice President JD Vance also joined in and criticized Zelensky for how he handled the discussion, saying it was unprofessional to focus on photo opportunities for the upcoming 2024 election instead of serious talks. He told Zelensky that Ukraine should be thanking the US for wanting to end the conflict.
Zelensky tried to explain the situation with Russia, but tensions rose further. Trump told Zelensky that he shouldn’t tell the US how to feel and claimed Zelensky’s position was weak. Their exchange was very public and was live-streamed worldwide.
Due to the argument, a joint press conference and lunch that were supposed to happen after the meeting were canceled. Later, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he learned a lot from the meeting and felt Zelensky wasn’t ready for peace as long as America was involved. He mentioned that Zelensky disrespectfully reacted in the Oval Office and could return only when he was ready for real peace.
