Oscar-nominated actor Karla Sofia Gascon will attend the Academy Awards on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. She got her Oscar nomination for her role in the Netflix musical “Emilia Perez.” Despite some recent trouble over old social media posts, sources say that Netflix will pay for her to be at the awards.

Gascon’s invitation to the Oscars was in doubt because of some offensive tweets she posted back in 2020 and 2021. These tweets included hurtful comments about topics like Muslims and the Black Lives Matter movement, which upset many people. After the backlash, Netflix chose not to promote her and took back their funding for her appearances at award shows.

Although she faced criticism, Gascon made history by becoming the first openly transgender actor nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. However, her past tweets have made her feel less celebrated about this important moment. Director Jacques Audiard, who worked with her on “Emilia Perez,” first showed concern about her behavior but later included her in his thank-you speech at the BAFTA Film Awards.

Gascon has said she is sorry for her past comments and understands how they hurt others. She wrote, “I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.” Since her tweets became controversial, she decided not to go to other major award shows, including the Critics Choice Awards and SAG Awards.

Now, with Netflix’s support, Gascon is confirmed to attend the Oscars. Details about her seating and red carpet interviews are still being worked out.
