Pope Francis, who is 88 years old, is currently in the hospital because of a serious respiratory infection. The Vatican reported that the pope’s condition is “complex,” meaning it’s not straightforward and will require him to stay in the hospital for a while.

Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome last Friday. He had been sick with bronchitis for a week, which got worse and turned into a respiratory infection. Doctors ran tests and found he has a type of infection involving multiple germs. They changed his medications and told him he needs complete rest.

Even though he is feeling better, with his slight fever gone, he is still not completely out of danger. The pope had breakfast and read some newspapers on Monday morning after a good night’s sleep. He has struggled with his health for some time, as he lost part of a lung when he was young due to an infection.

Despite his health issues, Pope Francis is known for working hard and keeping a busy schedule. Last year, he had pneumonia but only stayed in the hospital for three days. This time, even when he was having trouble talking because he was short of breath, he insisted on meeting people before going to the hospital.

The Vatican has canceled his appointments through Monday. He was supposed to meet artists in Rome as part of special church celebrations. His next public appearance is supposed to be on Wednesday for a general audience. However, it’s uncertain if he will attend some upcoming events, including a ceremony for new deacons this Sunday.
