The Trump administration has taken a big step by suing New York over a law that lets undocumented immigrants get driver’s licenses. This law also makes it harder for federal immigration agents to see state motor vehicle records.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the lawsuit in Albany, New York. She claims that New York’s Green Light Law goes against the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which says federal law is the highest. Bondi said, “It stops today,” vowing to take action against any state that doesn’t follow federal rules.
New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James are fighting back. James stated, “Our state laws keep everyone safe.” Hochul called the lawsuit just a normal legal case and noted that federal agents can still look at DMV records if they have a court warrant. “Most New Yorkers agree with this common-sense approach,” she added.
The lawsuit argues that the Green Light Law limits crucial information that federal agents need to enforce immigration laws and keep themselves safe. The Justice Department believes this DMV information is very important.
This court case follows many other federal actions against states that have similar protective laws. Just last week, a similar lawsuit was filed against Illinois, and there have been previous actions against sanctuary cities in places like California and Oregon.
Bondi warned other states with similar laws to watch out. “If you’re not sticking to federal law, you’re next; get ready!” she said.
This case will draw a lot of attention because it might change how federal and state governments work together on immigration. New York leaders are ready to fight back, setting up a big legal showdown over who gets to control immigration rules.
