The UK is taking strong action against illegal immigrants who work in places like Indian restaurants, nail bars, convenience stores, and car washes. The Home Office recently announced that there was a major operation across the UK to tackle illegal working. Yvette Cooper, the Secretary for the Home Office, reported that in January, officials raided 828 places – which is 48% more than last year. They arrested 609 people, a big jump of 73% compared to the previous year, according to PTI.
The focus is on businesses like restaurants, cafes, and shops in the food and drink industries. For example, seven people were arrested at an Indian restaurant in Humberside, northern England.
Cooper emphasized that it’s essential to enforce immigration rules to protect vulnerable people and the UK economy. She said, “For too long, employers could take advantage of illegal migrants, and too many could enter and work in the UK without anyone noticing.” She added that this situation puts lives at risk, especially for people trying to cross the English Channel in unsafe boats.
The Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, plans to discuss a new Border Security and Immigration Bill. This bill will give law enforcement more power to fight against groups that help people enter the UK illegally.
Since last July, actions against illegal workers have risen by 38%. The Home Office has issued 1,090 penalty notices, and employers can be fined up to GBP 60,000 for each illegal worker they employ. Eddy Montgomery, who works in enforcement at the Home Office, said, “These numbers show our strong commitment to stop those who break immigration laws.”
Special flights have also been used to deport illegal immigrants back to their home countries, including criminals. The Conservative Party, which is in opposition, called this new bill weak and is pushing for tougher rules on migrants looking for permanent residency in the UK.
