New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has announced that there will not be a new national authority for urban and regional planning led by the Prime Minister. This response came during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha from Union Minister Tokhan Sahu, in reply to a question from YSRCP MP S Niranjan Reddy.

A high-level committee, which included a retired civil servant, had suggested creating this new authority in its report titled “Pathways to Amrit Kaal.” They believed that cities could become strong economic centers in India. The committee also proposed city-level economic development councils, but Sahu clarified that these matters are the responsibility of state and local governments.

The committee, led by former IAS officer Keshav Varma, was set up in May 2022 to give advice on improving urban policies and planning. Their recommendations aimed to help cities grow better, making them drivers of economic success for the country. The committee’s work officially ends in July 2024.
