In India, officials from the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) discovered that over ₹1.88 lakh crore (or 1.88 trillion) in taxes was not paid from April to December 2024. This includes tricky cases where businesses tried to cheat the system. During this time, they found problems in 72,393 cases. The government made 132 arrests and got back ₹20,128 crore.
In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the CGST found GST evasion of ₹2.30 lakh crore in 20,582 cases. They managed to recover ₹31,758 crore and arrested 223 individuals for these actions. In the previous years, they uncovered ₹1.32 lakh crore in 2022-23 and ₹73,238 crore in 2021-22.
GST has four main tax rates: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. There are also special rates for gold, silver, and diamonds. Additionally, special taxes apply to items like tobacco and certain drinks.
To catch fake registrations, GST officials ran two important campaigns. The first campaign, from May to August 2023, found 21,808 fake GST numbers, leading to ₹24,357 crore in detected tax evasion. Eight people were arrested during this time. The second campaign, from August to October 2024, discovered 68,393 fake GST numbers, with ₹25,346 crore in evasion found. Here, 19 people were arrested.
