The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to undo the merger of four properties with the “Sheesh Mahal” located at 6, Flagstaff Road. This issue was central to the BJP’s campaign against Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who is facing allegations of corruption.
Virendra Sachdeva, the president of Delhi BJP, claimed that the bungalow was made larger by combining it with four other government properties. He urged the Lieutenant Governor to reverse this merger. Sachdeva mentioned that the next Chief Minister of Delhi will not live in this bungalow, which used to be Kejriwal’s official residence from 2015 until October 2024.
The new BJP MLA from Rohini, who was also the Leader of Opposition in the old Delhi Assembly, said the BJP’s Chief Minister would avoid this bungalow while it is under investigation for possible misuse. Gupta, another BJP member, highlighted that the land from the merged properties was reallocated for other government needs, like building government housing.
For over two years, especially during election campaigns, the BJP criticized Kejriwal, accusing him of corruption, including improperly renovating the bungalow and using luxurious furniture and appliances. They claimed he turned the official residence into an extravagant “Sheesh Mahal” by illegally taking over nearby government properties.
Sachdeva wrote a letter asking for the properties to be returned to their original status and for the area of 6, Flagstaff Road to be reduced to less than 10,000 square meters. Gupta also requested that the Lieutenant Governor speed up the investigation into the alleged wrongdoings, stressing the need for accountability to restore public trust.
